Hello Health Champions! Today, we’re going to talk about the secret to extended fasting and the remarkable benefits that come with it. Many people who practice intermittent fasting will go anywhere from 12 to 24 hours without food. However, extended fasting refers to anything beyond 16 to 24 hours. For instance, skipping the whole next day after having dinner at six o’clock will give you approximately 36 hours without food, and waiting to eat lunch the next day will give you about 42 hours.
The benefits of extended fasting are pretty numerous, including weight loss, autophagy, longevity, and the fastest way of reversing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. One of the most significant benefits of extended fasting that would affect most people is the reversal of type 2 diabetes, which reduces the risks of kidney failure, blindness, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases, among others.
However, despite the numerous benefits of fasting, only a few people practice it regularly. Some obstacles hindering people from trying extended fasting include ignorance, fear, and the keto flu. However, the key to successful and comfortable long-term fasting is electrolytes. Electrolytes are minerals we use in large quantities, and we need to consume hundreds of milligrams or even several grams daily. Examples of such electrolytes include sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.
Minerals are charged particles that conduct electricity, primarily in regulating fluid and pH balance and nerve signaling in the body. As you start fasting and keto, your body uses stored glycogen, which binds to water. One gram of glycogen holds about three to four grams of water, so as you burn up your glycogen, you begin to lose the water, and with it goes the electrolytes.
Sodium is the primary electrolyte in the extracellular fluid, so as you lose water, you also lose sodium. Losing electrolytes can lead to discomfort, fatigue, weakness, headaches, nausea, poor sleep, and other keto-flu-like symptoms. This is where electrolyte supplementation comes in, and ensuring you replenish your electrolytes adequately is crucial.
