Welcome to the Dr. Gundry podcast. Today, we’re discussing the benefits of fasting and why it’s crucial for your health span. Our guest is Dr. Joseph Antoon, CEO of El Nutra. Dr. Antoon is a trained physician who realized that the United States has sick care rather than a health care system. As a medical student, he began to understand that he first interacted with patients when they were already ill. And when he witnessed this, the doctor prescribed many medications that didn’t solve the root cause of the problem. Dr. Antoon realized that the medical industry is not effectively addressing chronic diseases. He felt that it is not just medications but lifestyle changes that are also needed.

He discovered that a prevention approach to healthcare is much more effective and cost-efficient than a medication-based approach. People should understand that prevention is better than a cure and adopt a healthy lifestyle to avoid illnesses that a sick care system can’t address. However, there is no actual market for prevention for healthy eating, exercise routine, and other lifestyle changes. The market in sick care is positioned as a set of products and services that helps ill patients rather than keeping people healthy longer.

Dr. Antoon also provided insights into fasting. He stated that a five-day vegan fast can dramatically boost your health span and even your lifespan. Fasting will help put your mitochondria on a five-day spa retreat, which is crucial for your health. Mitochondria power your cells and protect against diseases as you age. While they help to keep you healthy longer, a poor diet can cause mitochondrial dysfunction. A fasting-mimicking diet protects your mitochondria and can help improve longevity and healthy aging.

The problem is that our foods are less nutritious now than they were a half-century ago. For example, conventionally grown fruits and vegetables have lower vitamin and mineral content than their organic counterparts. And modern farming methods are not as nutrient-rich as traditional farming practices. Thus, making it more difficult to obtain vital nutrients for our bodies.

In conclusion, Dr. Antoon emphasizes that it’s high time healthcare systems worldwide shift towards prevention and lifestyle medicine so that society can focus on keeping people healthy for longer rather than just treating sick people. The healthcare system must focus on the short term, support sick care first, and then work on prevention. Fasting and healthy eating routines can protect our bodies by keeping our mitochondria healthy. Moreover, keeping our body nutrition-rich prolongs good health. This approach will benefit society, so people should take their health and lifestyle changes seriously.
