Olive Versus Avocado Oil: A Shocking Difference!

As a big fan of avocados, I was initially intrigued when I heard about avocado oil. However, after trying it, I have to say it’s not one of my favorites. So why all the craze about avocado oil? Well, it turns out that one of its most significant selling points is its high smoke point.

Now, you may be wondering what a smoke point is. Essentially, it’s the temperature at which an oil starts to smoke and release unpleasant fumes. Avocado oil’s high smoke point makes it an excellent choice for cooking, especially compared to less healthy oils like corn or cottonseed.

But here’s the catch – while avocado oil might be better than some other oils out there, it still doesn’t hold a candle to the health benefits of olive oil. One of the main reasons for this is that olive oil has a higher polyphenol content, which has been shown to have significant health benefits. On the other hand, avocado oil has very little polyphenols to speak of.

Another issue with avocado oil is that studies have shown that much of the commercial avocado oil in the US is adulterated with other oils to keep costs down. This means that even if you think you’re buying pure avocado oil, you may get a mix of less healthy oils like sunflower or grape seed.

So, where does that leave us? I think olive oil is the best choice for cooking and adding to your food. Despite its lower smoke point, it oxidizes less than coconut oil and has many health benefits. And if you want to mix things up, add some perilla oil to your cooking or salad dressings. It’s my favorite, with loads of alpha-linolenic acid and other longevity-promoting compounds.

Now, let me tell you a little story about my experiences with cooking oils. Once, I was at a friend’s house and noticed a bottle of coconut oil on their countertop. When I asked why, they said they’d heard it was a healthy choice for cooking. I didn’t want to burst their bubble right then and there, but I couldn’t help but cringe a little bit.

You see, coconut oil is one of those foods that has been massively overhyped in recent years. While it’s true that it has a high smoke point, it’s also high in saturated fat and has very few health-promoting polyphenols found in other oils like olive. Plus, if my friend happened to have the Apple E4 mutation (which 30% of the population does), then saturated fats like those found in coconut oil could be actively detrimental to their health!

In conclusion, the world of cooking oils can be tricky to navigate. But if you keep a few key things in mind – like looking for polyphenol-rich options and avoiding heavily adulterated oils, you should be fine. And if you’re ever in doubt, remember that good old olive oil is always a safe choice.

Summary of Transcript:
In this video, the speaker discusses avocado oil and its popularity, noting that it has a high smoke point and is mainly made up of monounsaturated fat called oleic acid. However, the speaker cautions that avocado oil has a low polyphenol content, and many commercial varieties be adulterated with other oils, such as linoleic acid. Eating a whole avocado provides beneficial fiber, but using avocado oil may not have the same benefits. The speaker recommends using olive oil for cooking and consumption due to its high polyphenol content and health benefits and suggests perilla oil as a good choice for salads and cooking due to its high alpha-linolenic acid content. The video also touches on coconut oil, which has a high smoke point but a low polyphenol content and may not benefit those with the Apple E4 mutation.
