Motivating Dietary Change | Nick Barringer

Motivating Dietary Change | Nick Barringer

Foreign listeners who tune in to podcasts are always interested in fat loss and body composition. But what about the Warfighters who want to shed some pounds or look ripped for their next mission? I had the pleasure of chatting with Lieutenant Behringer, a former Army Nutritionist who shared his unique approach to designing diets for the general population.

Dieting can be challenging, especially when you have to give up your favorite cheat meals or snacks. And that’s what Lieutenant Behringer found out the hard way when his initial approach of bombarding his clients with a ton of information didn’t quite do the trick.

However, he quickly adapted to his clients’ personalities, goals, and motivations. For example, when dealing with older, more seasoned Warfighters who want to play with their grandkids, he would emphasize how eating better will help them achieve that goal. Whereas with younger soldiers who need a bit more of a nudge, he would highlight how being flagged for being overweight can prevent them from getting promoted. And no one wants to miss out on that sweet cash.

Now, let’s talk about macronutrients. Lieutenant Behringer’s approach is very similar to Dr. Bill Campbell’s. He starts his diet with protein, which helps keep his clients full and preserves their lean muscle mass, which is crucial for Warfighters. Then, he builds the rest of the meal around that. He also recommends a higher carbohydrate intake for soldiers who engage in more strenuous physical activities and for carb-cycling purposes.

However, with all that being said, macronutrients should not be looked at in a vacuum. It’s important to remember that all food groups have their place in a balanced diet. In terms of fats, Lieutenant Behringer recommends prioritizing monounsaturated fats, such as olive oil, and consuming fatty fish for Omega-3s. He also advises avoiding trans fats as much as possible but enjoys moderate saturated fats.

We all know that nutrition is no joke, but to lighten the mood, I asked Lieutenant Behringer for a quick, humorous joke. He replied, “Why couldn’t the bicycle stand up by itself? Because it was two-tired!”

So, there you have it, folks, Lieutenant Behringer’s unique approach to designing diets for Warfighters. Remember, nutrition isn’t about depriving yourself of your favorite foods; it’s about balance and finding what works for you. And if all else fails, remember, laughter is the best medicine, even in dieting and nutrition.

Summary of Transcript:
The video discusses Lieutenant Behringer’s diet and weight loss approach for soldiers, particularly in the general population and recreational athletes. The approach involves finding what resonates with each soldier, as different motivators work for different people. The diet focuses on starting with protein for satiety and preserving lean muscle mass, with macronutrients prioritized in the following order: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. The amount of carbohydrates recommended is around 5-6 grams per kilogram of body weight for most people, with fat being whatever is left over after prioritizing protein and carbohydrates. The diet also prioritizes monounsaturated fat and avoids trans fats while respecting saturated fat. Simple tools like the plate method help soldiers plan their meals. Overall, the goal is to maximize fat loss while maintaining lean tissue.
