What do you do when you’re broken? It’s a question that we all ask ourselves at some point in our lives. Whether it’s a physical or emotional breakdown, we all have moments where we feel like we can’t go on. But what if I told you that being broken can be good? That it can be an opportunity to grow and become stronger? That’s the message David Goggins, former Navy SEAL and endurance athlete, wants to share with you.
Goggins is no stranger to being broken. He’s faced countless physical and mental challenges throughout his life, from being overweight and bullied as a child to enduring brutal training as a Navy SEAL. But he’s also learned how to turn those moments of weakness into moments of strength.
“When I’m broken, I relish it,” Goggins says. “That’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to use it. Cause… if I’m broken, then I just found my limitations. And until I know what my limitations are… How can I push them? How can I get better?”
It’s a mindset that can be applied to any aspect of life. Whether you’re trying to reach a fitness goal, advance in your career, or overcome a personal challenge, being broken can be an opportunity to identify and work to overcome your weaknesses.
But how do you do that? Goggins has a few tips. First, he says, you must stop caring what others think about you. It’s a lesson he learned the hard way after spending years trying to please everyone else and neglecting his needs. “Find out who you are and own that mother ******. Don’t ever worry about anybody or what the **** they think about you,” he says.
According to Goggins, another key to overcoming brokenness is to do something that sucks every day. This could mean pushing yourself to run a few miles when you don’t feel like it or taking on a challenging project. The point is to do something that makes you uncomfortable and forces you to grow.
Of course, it’s not always easy to embrace being broken. It can be painful, both physically and emotionally, and it can feel like there’s no way out. But Goggins says that’s where the real growth happens. “When you break, you have the opportunity to show the world. The whole world is what you are made of,” he says.
It’s a message that resonates with anyone who’s faced adversity and come out stronger on the other side. Take my friend Sarah, for example. She was a competitive gymnast in high school and college, but after a devastating injury, she was forced to retire from the sport she loved. For years, she struggled to find her identity outside of gymnastics and felt like she was constantly living in the shadow of her past.
But eventually, Sarah realized that her injury didn’t have to define her. She started training for a 5k race, then a 10k, and then a half marathon. She discovered a love for running that she never knew she had, and she found that the same discipline and determination that had served her well as a gymnast could be applied to this new challenge.
Now, Sarah is training to run a full marathon, and she’s never felt more empowered. “Being broken was hard, but it forced me to look at myself differently,” she says. “It made me realize that I’m capable of much more than I ever thought possible.”
That’s the beauty of being broken. It may be painful and challenging but it can also catalyze growth and transformation. Goggins says, “You will see that in the act of standing up. In the very act of fighting on. You will become. And you will remain UNBROKEN!”
