The Connection Between Gut Health and Wellbeing

Gut Health

The gut is one of the most critical areas in the body, yet it is often ignored and under-appreciated by mainstream medicine. Naturopathic Medicine has been looking at the gut for a long time, but it is only recently that the mainstream is starting to catch up and understand some of these issues.

There is extensive research on the connection between gut health and overall well-being. Your digestive tract is believed to be like a “second brain” that communicates with your central nervous system and produces neurochemicals linked to memory and thinking skills.

Your gut also dramatically affects your overall mental health and emotional well-being. It releases several neurotransmitters often associated with the brain, including dopamine and serotonin.

If your gut is not working as it should, you may experience symptoms that range from bloating to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or food intolerances. Various factors, such as an imbalance in the bacteria and yeast in your intestines, can cause these.

It would be best to consider making healthy eating choices and reducing your intake of processed foods, high-sugar, and processed oils to improve your gut health. Probiotics and prebiotics can help boost good gut bacteria and promote good intestinal function. However, talking to your doctor or healthcare provider before adding supplements to your diet is still good.
