Reconnecting with Your True Self: The I.F.S. Method – Richard Schwartz

Internal Family Systems (IFS) has changed my life; I believe it can do the same for you. It has helped me reduce stress and anxiety about what other people may think of me and has quietened my inner voice. Dr. Gabor Mate, author and IFS practitioner, is also a big fan of this approach. He has stated that IFS is “incredible” and “transformative.” Others, such as Tim Ferriss, have also found IFS to be life-changing.

So, what is IFS? At its core, the approach entails working with the different parts of ourselves. IFS is based on the idea that everyone has an assortment of minds or thoughts within them, and these minds are called parts. These parts interact with each other, almost like an external family, and they are all born with valuable qualities and resources to help us in our life. But trauma and attachment injuries can force them out of their naturally valuable states and into roles that can be destructive, effectively freezing them in time. Many are stuck in the past, still behaving like five years old. We can help them return to their naturally valuable states by acknowledging these parts and understanding their roles.

Having many minds with different voices and thought patterns that have autonomy might seem scary at first, particularly in Western society, where our culture is oriented towards thinking of ourselves as having one mind with different thoughts and emotions that emanate from it. However, IFS isn’t about creating multiple personality disorders; it’s about looking at these parts and how they relate to one another rather than viewing each part in isolation.

The beauty of IFS is that it’s a systems approach, which means it looks at the larger context in which symptoms make sense. For example, many physicians have treated the body as a series of discrete parts that don’t speak to one another. This approach often results in a cycle of referrals and misdiagnosis. Instead, IFS acknowledges the larger context of a person’s life, including their environment, relationships, and societal expectations.

By taking a systems approach, we can reorganize the “inner family” and free up parts to be who they are naturally designed to be. As Dr. Gabor Mate notes, “You can’t take an acting-out kid out of their family and just tell them to cut it out.” In the same way, we can’t ignore the larger context in which our parts operate, which can lead to a passive patient who feels defective.

One of the powerful aspects of IFS is the ability to identify the different parts of ourselves. We all have many parts, including inner critic, managers, firefighters, and exiles. An inner critic is a critical voice always present, telling us what we should or shouldn’t do. Managers are parts that try to keep us safe by preventing us from doing things that may cause harm. Firefighters are reactive parts that respond to trauma or intense emotions by seeking relief through unhealthy behaviors, such as overeating or self-harm. Finally, exiles are parts that carry intense emotions from past traumas and are often hidden away.

We all have these parts, and they can all be helpful when functioning in their natural state. However, they become destructive when these parts are forced into roles due to trauma or past experiences. The IFS approach identifies these parts, understands their roles, and helps them return to their naturally valuable states.

In conclusion, Internal Family Systems is an approach that has transformed my life, and I genuinely believe it can do the same for you. By understanding the roles of our different parts, we can free ourselves from destructive behavior patterns and find a sense of calmness, contentment, and happiness. It’s a systems approach that acknowledges the larger context in which our parts operate, and it has the potential to truly change our lives for the better.

This video features a conversation between the host and the creator of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, Dr. Richard Schwartz. IFS therapy utilizes the idea that a person’s mind comprises multiple sub-personalities or “parts” that can conflict. These parts can be stuck in dysfunctional roles due to trauma and attachment injuries. IFS seeks to help people understand and work with these parts to free them from their stuck roles and transform them into naturally valuable states. The conversation also touches on systems thinking and its application to health and wellness. The host shares his experience with IFS and expresses gratitude for its impact on his life.
