Mark Zuckerberg Shares Insights on the Metaverse and NFTs

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, recently appeared on the Impact Theory podcast with Tom Bilyeu to discuss the metaverse and NFTs. Both of these topics have been gaining increasing interest in recent times, particularly in the world of tech. In this article, we’ll delve into some of the key highlights from the discussion, including Mark’s thoughts on the metaverse, the Immersive Internet, Metaverse Economy and Business Models, Meta’s approach to decentralization, NFTs, and more.

Making the Metaverse Reality

The metaverse is a term that has been used to describe a hypothetical future internet, where people can interact with each other in immersive virtual worlds. For Mark, achieving this vision is a significant goal for Facebook. He believes that the metaverse will make social connection and community more meaningful, and potentially change the way people work and play. According to Mark, building a technology to achieve the metaverse’s goal is not an easy feat, but Facebook is working hard towards making that vision a reality.

Defining the Immersive Internet

Mark believes that the Immersive Internet is an integral part of the metaverse, as it allows people to interact with each other on a more genuine level. It’s not simply an extension of the internet we know today, but it’s a whole new way of experiencing and interacting with the virtual world.

Roadmap for Meta

Meta (formerly Facebook) has recently rebranded and announced its ambitions to focus on the metaverse. During the conversation, Mark discussed how Meta is going to achieve its goal. They are currently focused on creating a roadmap for Meta’s development, which will enable them to take a step-by-step approach towards making the metaverse a reality.

NFT Altered Experiences

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are unique digital assets that can prove ownership and authenticity of a digital item. Mark believes that NFTs can fundamentally alter how we experience and express ourselves in the digital world. He envisions people owning their digital assets, such as clothing, and expressing themselves more authentically and meaningfully than they would with generic digital offerings.

A.I. in Metaverse

Artificial intelligence (A.I.) is likely to play an important role in the metaverse. Mark discussed how A.I. will be used to enhance the user experience and enable new levels of immersion.

Metaverse Economy and Business Models

As the metaverse grows, its economy will need to be developed to enable commerce. Meta is currently exploring different business models and approaches to monetization, including virtual real estate and digital advertising.

Meta’s Approach to Decentralization

Meta is adopting a decentralized approach to the metaverse, which means that users will retain ownership of their data and digital assets, instead of them being stored on centralized servers. This will enable greater privacy and security for users.

Rebranding Facebook

Meta’s rebranding and focus on the metaverse was a significant event. Mark discussed his motivations behind rebranding and the challenges of implementing such a change.

Confident Even With Pushback

Mark acknowledged that there is pushback around the idea of the metaverse. However, he remains confident and believes that the concept has significant potential to improve people’s lives.

Conclusion

Mark Zuckerberg’s discussion on the Impact Theory podcast offers valuable insights into the metaverse and NFTs. These technologies are changing the way we interact with the world, and they have significant implications for the future of commerce, work and social connection. Mark’s perspective on the metaverse and NFTs highlights new and exciting possibilities for the future of tech.

If the allure of social media is connection, then the allure of the metaverse will be social experiences in a virtual world like never seen before. It’s likely you’ve heard that a confused mind says, no and in this very special episode Mark Zuckerberg joins Tom to share his thoughts around what the metaverse can potentially do for social connection and community.

The unchartered territory of building a metaverse economy leaves the door wide open to what Mark calls an immersive internet that will change gaming and how and where you are able to work. Building technology in a space that hasn’t been created is no easy feat, yet Mark Zuckerberg, who needs no introduction, has been doing this for nearly two decades.

Meta NFT announcement at a glance:

Starting this week we’ll begin testing Digital Collectibles on Instagram, which will allow a small group of U.S. creators and collectors to share NFTs on Instagram that they have created or bought. In the future, we will also roll out Digital Collectibles on Facebook and allow people to display and share their digital collectibles as AR stickers in Instagram Stories, bringing the benefits of this technology to even more creators and collectors.

Details on how digital collectibles will work:

Creators and collectors in this test group will be able to post NFTs that they created or own on Instagram by linking third-party digital wallets in-app.

NFTs displayed on the app will receive a special ‘shimmer’ visual treatment and both the creator and owner of the NFT will be attributed for the content.

Starting at launch, the blockchains that are supported include Ethereum and Polygon, with Flow and Solana coming soon.

The third-party wallets compatible for use at launch will include Rainbow, MetaMask, and Trust Wallet, with Coinbase and Dapper coming soon.

There will be no fees associated with posting or sharing a digital collectible on Instagram.

Soon, we will roll out digital collectibles on Facebook, and will also soon allow people to display and share their digital collectibles as AR stickers in Instagram Stories, bringing the benefits of this technology to even more creators and collectors.

Mark on NFTs as a form of expression:

“I think our whole thrust as a company is around helping people connect and communicate. Part of communication is your exchanging information, but a lot of it is signaling and expression and kind of saying something about yourself and trying to find like-minded people and form communities and express your values… And I think that there’s no reason to think that will be any different in digital spaces. That’s a lot of what early social networks started off as, and I think that they’ve become more sophisticated in terms of helping people express and share and kind of project the expression that they want. But when I think about NFTs in the metaverse, I think if you’re spending a lot of time [in the metaverse] – whether it’s working in VR if a fair amount of your meetings are happening in virtual reality in the metaverse. Or, as a hologram sitting there with someone, then you’re going to care about what you look [like] there. And, you’re probably not going to want to wear the same thing every day, right? So you’re probably going to have a collection of clothing and digital objects, just like you have clothing in the physical world. And you’re going to want that clothing to be meaningful and express something about you. So you’re not just gonna want it to be generic, like a lot of these early systems. What color shirt do you want? Which designer made it? Which creator made it? That’s going to be meaningful. And I think that that needs a whole format for commerce. And I think NFTs are going to be a really important part of that.”
