Fasting has been linked to numerous health benefits such as weight loss, reduced risk of diabetes and heart disease, and increased longevity. Autophagy, the process of clearing out old and unwanted cellular material, is triggered by nutrient deprivation, which can be achieved through fasting. This process is thought to help prevent degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, as well as cancer. To induce autophagy, fasting for 14-16 hours is necessary, but for maximal benefits, fasting for 24-72 hours is recommended. However, this level of fasting is not suitable for everyone and should be done with caution.
