Diet’s Impact on Sleep

*****
Summary of Transcript:
Getting high-quality sleep is important for weight loss and overall health. The ketogenic diet helps with weight loss by calming the sympathetic nervous system, decreasing cortisol, increasing sleep, and reducing hunger. A study compared a high-carb, low-fat diet to a low-carb, tall-fat ketogenic diet and found that the latter resulted in an increase in non-REM sleep, which is important for fat burning and feeling physically rejuvenated. A low-carb diet also helps with zinc deficiency, which can negatively impact rest. Conversely, poor quality and quantity of sleep lead to increased hunger, higher absorption of glucose leading to insulin spikes, and cortisol release, all of which increase appetite and make it harder to lose weight.

Summary of Description:
Dr. Eric Berg discusses how diet can affect sleep and how sleep can affect diet. A study found that a low-carb, high-fat diet can significantly increase deep delta or non-REM sleep, where most fat is burned, and people wake up rejuvenated. Zinc deficiency, which greatly influences parts of the brain that control sleep, may lead to sleeping problems. Poor quality and quantity of sleep increase the desire to eat, leading to weight gain. Getting proper rest to lose weight is important; a keto diet can make weight loss easier.

How Does Diet Affect Sleep? Dr. Berg Shares Some Surprising Insights

Have you ever felt tossing and turning in bed, unable to get a decent night’s sleep? You’re not alone. Millions of people worldwide suffer from sleep disorders, leaving them feeling tired and groggy during the day.

But did you know that your diet could play a crucial role in your inability to get a good night’s sleep? In this video, Dr. Berg, a renowned chiropractor specializing in healthy ketosis and intermittent fasting, reveals some fascinating insights into the connection between diet and sleep.

The Science Behind the Connection

One study found that a low-carb, high-fat (ketogenic) diet can significantly increase non-REM or deep delta sleep, allowing you to burn most of your fat while sleeping and wake up feeling rejuvenated.

On the other hand, a high-carb, low-fat diet can lead to zinc deficiency, which can influence parts of the brain that control sleep. Taking zinc supplements before bed can help regulate your sleep if you’re having trouble sleeping.

Another fascinating fact that Dr. Berg shares is that poor REM sleep increases glucose absorption, spiking blood sugar, and affecting insulin levels, leading to increased hunger.

The Bottom Line

Sleep can’t be overstated if you’re looking to lose weight or improve your overall health. Getting a good night’s sleep can help regulate hunger, leading to fewer cravings throughout the day. And we all know that sticking to a diet is much easier when not craving snacks all day!

So, if you’re struggling to get enough sleep, consider changing your diet and incorporating more sleep-friendly foods. Try the keto diet or intermittent fasting, which has improved sleep quality and quantity.

Does diet regulate sleep, or does sleep control diet? An interesting study compared a high-carb, low-fat diet to a low-carb, high-fat diet (keto). They found that a low-carb, high-fat diet can significantly increase NREM sleep (non-REM sleep or deep delta sleep). This is the type of sleep where you burn most of your fat and wake up feeling rejuvenated.

You will be more deficient in zinc on a high-carb, low-fat diet. Zinc can greatly influence parts of the brain that control sleep. If you have a sleeping problem, taking zinc before bed may help. You will also be hungry all of the time. On the other hand, if you’re on a low-carb, high-fat diet, you won’t be as deficient in zinc. You will also have decreased hunger.

If you have poor sleep (in quality and quantity), you will notice an increased desire to eat. Poor sleep equals more hunger. One study found that poor REM sleep increases the absorption of glucose, which spikes blood sugars and affects insulin, making you hungry. Also, if you’re not sleeping, you could have high cortisol, increasing your appetite.

If you’re struggling with weight, don’t forget about getting better sleep. It’s also much easier to lose weight on the keto diet.
