Mitigating Genetic Depression Risk: The Key?

Summary of The Key to Mitigating Genetic Depression Risk?:
This study highlights the importance of social connection in reducing the risk of depression, particularly for those with a higher genetic risk. It looked at two different populations going through stressful times: first-year medical residents and recently widowed older adults. Data showed that those with a higher genetic risk for depression had higher rates of depression when they lost social support, but lower rates when they gained social support. The findings suggest that more could be done to target social support to those who can benefit the most.
