Osteoporosis and osteopenia, two challenging conditions that impact bone health, have various possible treatment options. However, it’s essential to understand their effects on the body before selecting the best course of action.
Conventional treatments, such as Fosamax, actinal, Boniva, and Zomata, can help create more bone, but the quality of bone may not be optimal. These medications also pose long-term risks, including mandibular necrosis, atypical femoral fractures, atrial fibrillation, and uveitis.
So what are the additional options? Calcium can be controversial. Whether it helps bone health or not is a question that’s still unanswered. However, specific types of calcium, such as calcium citrate or hydroxyapatite, may be helpful if taken with vitamin C, as it increases absorption. Vitamin D, vitamin K2, and magnesium are other supplements that can benefit bone health.
Magnesium, with 300 bodily functions, can help with calcium absorption. Manganese, estrogen, progesterone, boron, zinc, collagen, silica, tocotrienols, and melatonin are other supplements that can reduce inflammation, stimulate osteoblast, and inhibit osteoclast.
A lifestyle change can also prevent and maintain high-quality bones. Addressing insulin resistance, changes in macros (more protein, fewer carbohydrates), quitting smoking and limiting alcohol intake, adequate protein consumption (at least 30-50g with each meal), high-quality sleep, and stress management can also go a long way in maintaining bone health. Strength training is an excellent option to help improve bone health and insulin sensitivity. Vibration plates can also stimulate bone growth.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is another option worth considering. Estrogen can improve bone turnover and preserve bone mineral density, while progesterone is also crucial. The Hope trial utilized 0.445 to 0.3 milligrams per day transdermally of estrogen to help preserve bone mineral density and reduce fractures.
It’s a complicated and often overwhelming process when selecting the best action for bone health. I have a patient who’s struggling with her bone health. Recently, she disclosed how she was once hiking and suddenly tripped on a rock, fracturing her wrist. She was then diagnosed with osteopenia. This story had a tremendous impact on me, making me both empathetic and worried about the number of people suffering the same fate or worse.
It all comes down to balance. As with most things, a little bit of everything is the key. We must listen to our bodies and adapt to what works best. Any treatment or supplement must be chosen thoughtfully and discussed with your healthcare provider. A healthy lifestyle, incorporating regular exercise and a balanced diet, is also an optimal means to maintain overall wellness. So let’s stay mindful of our bone health and care for ourselves. The future of our bones depends on us.

Summary of Transcript:
The video discusses conventional treatments for osteoporosis and osteopenia, such as medications like Fosamax and Boniva, which can create more bone but also have long-term risks, such as mandibular necrosis and atypical femoral fractures. Calcium supplementation is controversial and may not reduce fracture risk. Still, other supplements like vitamin D, vitamin K2, magnesium, manganese, boron, zinc, collagen, silica, tocotrienols, and melatonin can benefit bone health. The HOPE trial shows that hormone replacement therapy can effectively preserve bone mineral density. Lifestyle changes such as strength training, addressing insulin resistance, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol use, adequate protein intake, high-quality sleep, and managing stress can also help preserve high-quality bones. It is essential to discuss these options with a licensed healthcare provider.
