If you’re looking for ways to boost your health, it’s important to pay attention to the vitamins and nutrients you consume. One such vitamin that is often overlooked is vitamin K2. In this second part of our talk on vitamin K2, we will delve deeper into the vitamin’s amazing benefits, explore the foods that contain it, and understand how it is linked to vitamin D.

K2 and Mortality

Studies have shown that not getting enough vitamin K2 in your diet can increase your risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and even certain cancers. In fact, research has found that people with higher levels of vitamin K2 in their blood have a lower risk of dying from all causes.

Vitamin K2 Benefits

Aside from reducing mortality risk, there are many other benefits to adding vitamin K2 to your diet. Studies have shown that vitamin K2 can improve bone density, reduce the risk of fractures, and even improve insulin sensitivity in people with type 2 diabetes. Some research has also suggested that vitamin K2 may lower the risk of prostate cancer.

My Recommendation to Patients

Based on these findings, I generally recommend that my patients aim to consume about 100 micrograms of vitamin K2 per day. To do this, you’ll want to include foods like grass-fed butter, cheese, and egg yolks in your diet. You can also take a vitamin K2 supplement if you’re unable to get enough through food alone.

Vitamin K2 and Insulin Sensitivity

One of the key benefits of vitamin K2 is its ability to improve insulin sensitivity. This means that your body is better able to use insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. This can be especially beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes or those at risk of developing it.

Vitamin K2 and Weston Price

Another interesting study looked at the work of Weston Price, a dentist who traveled the world in the 1930s to study the diets of different cultures. Price found that people who ate traditional diets, which often included high levels of vitamin K2, had better dental health than those who ate modern, processed foods. This highlights the importance of including vitamin K2-rich foods in your diet for overall health and wellness.

Vitamin K2 and Vasodilation

Some studies have suggested that vitamin K2 may also promote vasodilation, or the widening of blood vessels. This can help to lower blood pressure and improve circulation throughout the body.

– Cheese (especially Gouda, brie, and blue cheese)
– Egg yolks
– Natto (a traditional Japanese dish made from fermented soybeans)

It’s important to note that vitamin K2 is not as abundant in plant-based foods as it is in animal-based foods, so vegetarians and vegans may want to consider taking a vitamin K2 supplement or incorporating foods like natto into their diets.
