Around six years ago, a Cardiologist found intermittent fasting and it changed her life. She had been doing all the wrong things for her health, such as not sleeping enough, having a stressful job, and doing intense exercise without fueling her body the way it needed to. She was entering perimenopause and was gaining weight, not sleeping, and feeling anxious and bloated. She found that fasting made her feel better, so she incorporated it into her teachings and programs. She also found that a lot of what she had been taught was wrong, such as the concept of heart healthy grains, and that women don’t eat enough protein and the wrong types of fats and carbohydrates. She says that people need to prioritize sleep, do the right types of exercise, and have anti-inflammatory nutrition. She also says that stress management is critically important. Perimenopause starts in a woman’s late 30s or early 40s and is characterized by decreased progesterone, increased estrogen, and symptoms such as sleep problems, depression, anxiety, heavier periods, and breast tenderness. Women may be offered antidepressants or progesterone, but intermittent fasting can also be a helpful tool.
